Bass vs Batter type Drumheads

Can I use a batter type head on my bass drum (visa versa)?

Bass heads use a wider gauge flesh-hoop to accommodate wooden counter-hoop and are generally too wide to sit inside metal counter-hoops for snare/tom, especially if it's an undersized or tight fitting hoop. Players manage to interchange head types in some cases, but it's not likely nor recommended for optimum performance.
When purchasing drumheads, make sure the description matches the drum you're using it on...'bass' for bass and 'batter' for snare/toms.
